head shotHi there! I’m Jaime and I am a 40-something year old wife, full time businesswoman, part time blogger and yoga teacher, foodie, and lover of life! Several years ago I discovered that eating a diet comprised of foods in forms close to their natural state makes a huge difference in my overall health, particularly as I manage living with Crohn’s disease – which I’ve had since I was 19 years old.

Once I realized how much better I felt when I ate foods that were not toxic to my system and wanted to share that with the world, but as a private person I was hesitant to open up about my health challenges. Eventually I found the courage and my blog, Gutsy By Nature was born!

With my diet cleaned up, I started looking to other sources of toxic exposure in the world. I was shocked when I learned that when I applied sunscreen, makeup, lotion… even shampoo!… and the dozens of other products that I use to look my best in both my professional and personal life, that I was applying toxic chemicals directly to my skin.

For years I had assumed those products were safe, because I assumed the government was regulating them. In fact, when it comes to the personal care industry, there are very minimal regulations. Companies are allowed to use known toxins—ingredients that have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and even autoimmune conditions like the one I live with—and they don’t even have to tell us.

Why does this matter? We all know that the skin is our largest organ, but we often don’t remember that it absorbs much of what is applied to it directly into our body and those compounds can affect all of our body systems. This hit home to me when I was prescribed a medication in patch form. If that little dot of medication could absorb into my body and have such a powerful affect, what happened when I slathered lotion all over my body?!

So what can we do?

Opting out is an option for some of us, but I have to put on a professional face in order to be effective in my full time day job and just going totally makeup and product free is not something I can do. Plus, I’ll admit to a bit of vanity too and that I’m not thrilled to see my age in the mirror!

Some of my “crunchier” friends make their own beauty care products and they look amazing. I tried that for a while, but quickly realized that baggies of white powder were not compatible with my frequent flying professional life when TSA stopped me three trips in a row. The hot summer day when my travel jar of coconut oil leaked all over my toiletry bag was the final straw!

And I’ll be honest… I rather like pampering myself with luxurious products and makeup that makes me look like my best self all day long. DIY beauty might work for some, but not me.

That’s why I was thrilled when I discovered that there are companies who are working to create safer beauty products and change the industry from the inside out, rather than waiting for the government to change the regulations.

Welcome to Beautycounter

Welcome-to-Beautycounter

One of those companies is Beautycounter and I was first introduced to their products as a consumer like you, just looking for some mascara and sunscreen that worked and wouldn’t make me sick! I quickly fell in love with the whole line and decided that I wanted to help spread the word and advance the mission of getting safer beauty products into everyone’s hands.

What makes Beautycounter different?

Beautycounter has voluntarily banned more than 1,500 ingredients, setting a new health and safety standard— all while ensuring the products perform, and that they’re as indulgent as any luxury equivalant in the market. I also really appreciate that Beautycounter is dedicated to making changes on the legislative level. They are taking action in Washington and working to reform the current laws, in hopes that other skin care companies will follow their strict safety guidelines. They also work very closely to support 3 non-profit organizations that are doing great work to reduce our amount of chemical exposure. Watch this short video to learn why I am so proud to be a part of this company.

First I fell in love with the stick sunscreen because it is made from safe zinc oxide and really works, but doesn’t turn my face a chalky white. Then I tried the lengthening mascara and was thrilled that it stayed in place all day long, even as I’m running from one meeting to the next. Next, I tried the charcoal cleansing bar and was impressed with how it left my skin feeling detoxified but never dry. My hands and lips tend to get really dry, especially in the wintertime or if I am dealing with a flare of Crohn’s disease, but I have found the hand cream to be very effective without feeling sticky or heavy and the peppermint balm lip conditioner to soothe and cool year round.
